Capturing a bird in flight is a favorite discipline among photographers. But making a shot truly work isn’t just about technique and camera settings. It’s a combination of many elements that need to come together. That’s exactly what my brand-new video course is about — for the first time, I dive deep into a single topic. This is the first part of a planned mini-series titled Photography Techniques by Petr Bambousek. I know tutorials on photographing birds in flight already exist, and general tips are easy to find online. In my course, I wanted to avoid general truths about how to “properly” photograph birds in flight. Instead, I describe in detail my own system that I use in the field. Each chapter goes in-depth so that photographers understand not just WHAT I set, but most importantly WHY and WHEN I adjust settings to get the most out of the situation.

Will I benefit from the course even if I don’t shoot with OM System (Olympus)?
This course is for all photographers who admire bird-in-flight photos and want to be inspired by my techniques – regardless of the camera brand they use. I personally shoot with OM System (Olympus) equipment, and the setup examples are based on the OM-1 II. However, I designed the course to be as brand-neutral as possible. Whenever a setting differs, I explain how to look for an equivalent function on other systems. The course also emphasizes that camera settings are only one of several elements in bird-in-flight photography. Most of the concepts I present are completely independent of brand. If I ever switch to another system, my approach to photographing would remain practically the same. And if a breakthrough technology emerges that changes my workflow, I will update the course accordingly – updates will always be free for you.
