LIGHT IN THE WILD
Mastering flash for wildlife photography
For me, flash is far from just a technical tool to add light to a dark scene. I see it above all as an incredibly creative tool that allows me to bring a new dimension—or even an entirely new reality—into an image. In this course, I will not only cover the fundamentals of flash operation in detail, but above all share all of my workflows and techniques that I have developed over the years to capture compelling photographs of insects, frogs, reptiles, birds, and mammals. When—and more importantly, how—do I use one, two, or even multiple flashes? What diffusers do I use and why? Why have I practically stopped using flash for standard bird photography thanks to modern technology? What ethical principles guide my use of flash in wildlife photography? You will find all this and much more in my new video course, which I have been preparing for several years.
This is the second part of my planned series Photographic Techniques by Petr Bambousek. I am aware that tutorials on using flash in wildlife photography already exist and that general information is easy to find online. That’s why I wanted to avoid repeating universal truths about the “right” way to use flash, and instead focus on describing in detail my own system that I apply directly in the field. Each chapter goes in depth so that photographers will not only understand WHAT I set, but more importantly WHY and WHEN I make those adjustments to get the most out of each situation.

Do I Need to Own OM System (Olympus) Gear?
This course is designed for all photographers who are inspired by flash photography of insects, frogs, reptiles, birds, and mammals—and who want to learn from my approach. It applies regardless of the camera brand you use. I personally shoot with OM System (Olympus) equipment, and the settings demonstrations are based on the OM-1 Mark II. However, I have structured the course to be as brand-neutral as possible. The flash settings are demonstrated with the Olympus FL-700WR and especially the Godox V/TT350. Whenever a setting differs between systems, I point out how to find the equivalent function on other brands. Moreover, the course emphasizes that camera and flash settings are only one of several elements in flash photography. Most of the concepts I share are completely independent of brand choice. If I were ever to switch to another system, my approach in the field would remain virtually the same. And if groundbreaking technology emerges that changes my methods, I will update the course accordingly. All future updates are included free of charge.
